In what appears to be a first of its kind ruling, a Los Angeles Superior Court on February 11, 2016 granted a motion to enforce a private gambling debt, ruling that Ellis George’s client is entitled to collect a debt of $1,637,788 incurred in a series of high stakes home poker (Texas Hold’em) games. When Defendant failed to pay this debt, Ellis George brought suit. Ellis George’s team, consisting of Eric M. George, Benjamin D. Scheibe, and Christopher M. Kolkey, defeated claims that the gambling in question was illegal and that enforcement of a private gambling debt would violate California public policy.
