Ellis George LLP today secured a significant victory in the United States Supreme Court. Ellis George partner Richard Klingler, assisted by Jared Forbus, led the briefing and argued Havana Docks Corp. v. Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. et al., resulting in an 8-1 decision in favor of the firm’s client, the former owner of port docks in Havana confiscated by the Cuban government and later used by four global cruise lines in violation of the Helms-Burton Act. The decision reversed a Court of Appeals ruling that had set aside four judgments each exceeding $100 million, entered in favor of the dock owner prior to the firm’s representation. Each cruise line was represented before the U.S. Supreme Court by major law firms with leading appellate law practices.
